Twas the night before Christmas
Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.
So – I finished the two Christmas stockings for my great nephew and great niece.
I had planned to photograph them hanging from the mantelpiece surrounded by Christmas decorations. Unfortunately a particularly nasty virus delayed me in finishing them. By the time I had them ready to post, many parts of the country were paralysed by heavy snowfall and Royal Mail had a backlog of four million parcels.
There was no time to lose. The stockings had to be posted quickly. But, the light being so dreadful on the one morning I had to photograph them, this was the only place in the entire house where I could get a decent shot. Not very Christmassy, I know. Perhaps you can imagine the fireplace and mantelpiece, and the Christmas decorations…
I sent them off via Royal Mail Special Delivery on their 230 mile journey, and was relieved when they arrived safely early the next afternoon. They are now hanging in the home of Taylor and Isabelle, where I hope Father Christmas will soon come to fill them up with little presents.
I’m very happy with the stockings. They were enjoyable to stitch, and I’m pleased with the finished items. They’re lined with a heavy cotton fabric that matches exactly the piping cords – dark green for Isabelle’s and a burgundy / brown colour for Taylor’s. There’s also a heavy lining fabric between the linen outer and the cotton inner fabrics. The making up was always the stage that worried me, and I’m still a bit concerned that the loops might not withstand the weight of too many presents.
The cross stitch panels are embellished with charms – metal, mother of pearl, glass beads and buttons. The back of each stocking bears a dedication from me. I don’t consider any large piece of needlework to be complete until it has been signed, dated and if appropriate, dedicated.
And I’ve already received an order for next Christmas! My younger son liked these so much he asked for one for himself. I hope to do four during the year – one for each of us. Fortunately, there are lots more designs to choose from in this Shepherd’s Bush series.
… I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”
Clement Clarke Moore (1779 – 1863)

Thank you

Yayyy!!! The stockings finally!!! I was really hoping to see them, full and finished. They look gorgeous. Beautiful!! Umm…may I get one too?
Merry Christmas to you and your family Janice. You have been a wonderful friend, an inspiration and a great person to know and talk to..Someday, I hope to meet you near that blue door.
Have a wonderful Christmas.
Happy Christmas to you and your loved ones. Your stockings look fantastic. I’m sure they will be treasured.
These Christmas stockings are really something. I’ll bet your great nephew and niece hold on to them and pass them down to their own children someday. These will be family heirlooms.
Best Wishes to you and your family for the Holidays!
These are stunning! What works of love and care! And what treasures
My mom is working on a needlepoint stocking for my daughter (begun over 6 years ago!) and I have framed the crewel work she finished (after threatening to mail it off to you to be finished!)
Happiest of Holidays to you and your family. I can only image the warmth, the beauty, and the love that fills your home in this amazing season of hope and love. Thank you for all your support for my video project – i know YOU understand.
And thank you for being one of my many Lights of Inspiration in 2010. It was a great year and I look forward to more creative adventures shared between us in the coming year!

Ha, Lis – I’m still on your blog – savouring the posts between other things I have to do today! I’ve been looking for the crewel work but you don’t seem to have posted it…? I would love to see a photo of the finished thing. Not least because it means I am free from the threat of having to complete it!!! Seriously, I could not match your mom’s skill! As for the stockings, these took around 2 to 3 months to do them both. If your mum gets down to it now she might just finish in time for Santa to fill it up!
Merry Merry Christmas!!!
have a lovely night with your family!!!
They are so beautiful, Janice!
)
I’m sure the kids will love them! (Or maybe more whatever will be inside, but,… kids be kids, right?
And the place they are hanging is great too with the outside view. Reminds me of little elves sneaking in to fill it. Someone has to help poor Santa do his job, no?
Btw. I am on the second week of the Artist’s way (well, third week, but the reading part is the second
). It is truly amazing and I am sooo glad you pointed it out to me (and others).
I hope you have a great Christmas weekend! Stay safe & have a happy time,
Nicole
Janice–they turned out so beautifully. Thanks for posting the pictures. I hope your holiday was filled with joy.
This is totally enchanting
Such beautiful embroidery, fine details, patterns, all the small decorations you added, the more I look at those stockings, the more I find to admire. I am sure Isabelle and Taylor were delighted, thrilled with those wonderful gifts.
You did a great job on these, Janice – Well Done!
Beautifully finished, too…
