Carisbrooke: Another viewpoint
I have a theory that the more we understand and appreciate the beauty of our subject, the better our photographs will be. My husband and I regularly go out taking photographs together, and when I see his images I often wish I could have seen and captured something the way he did. But sometimes – just sometimes – I look at his photographs and I know that he doesn’t ‘get’ something the way I ‘get’ it! An example is the photograph I took when I fell in love with the alpaca earlier this month.
So when I saw these photos, taken by my friend Judith Stratton, what struck me most of all was her love of Carisbrooke Castle shining out from every single one. Judith goes to the castle regularly and always carries her camera so she’s often in the right place at the right time with the right equipment to get perfect shots!
Now, I wouldn’t want you to think that Judith is old enough to have been around in Medieval times when knights came calling at the castle gates! The image above is a collage of two of her photographs and was used for the cover of a DVD compiled after a history pageant staged at the castle a couple of years ago by local drama, dance, youth theatre and history groups. Judith’s original gate image is below. The knight on horseback was another of her photographs, taken at a jousting exhibition and superimposed here to create this wonderful atmospheric scene.
Next is a beautiful shot of the gatehouse in the evening light. At the left of this shot you can just see the wooden gate I showed you close-up yesterday.
Another early morning mist image next, this one taken from the Castle, looking towards the town of Carisbrooke:
We don’t get a lot of snow here on the Isle of Wight, and when we do it’s fair to say no-one really knows how to cope with it! So last February the whole island ground to a halt when snow not only fell but settled. This is a scene from within the castle grounds at that time:
And finally – you remember pretty Jill from yesterday? Well it turns out she likes nothing better than a good joke! So here’s a limerick I’ve written for her…
There was a young donkey called Jill
Trod the boards at the castle treadmill.
She liked nothing more
Than to laugh and to roar
And to give all the tourists a thrill!
I’m sorry, you’re right – I should just stick to posting photographs… But it made Jill laugh!
Thanks to Judith for allowing me to post these. And I hope you’ve enjoyed another perspective on Carisbrooke Castle.

i agree wholeheartedly with your theory. maybe it’s about wanting to communicate to others what we see as special or beautiful about our subject or maybe it’s just easier to capture something if you understand it, but i do think that’s what makes some photos really call out. fun to see the castle in different seasons, so i’d like to thank judith too!
Very nice to look at. Capturing something that has been around for a thousand years on one moment of one day of the 10s of 1,000s of days it has stood there. And oh, Jill has such a winning smile!!
Those pics are awesome!
Congrats to her to make it on a DVD cover!
I love the laughing donkey!
I found You from mythopoli`s blog, and decide to visit here!
Your pictures are really fine!!!
I love those gates, and the snow-picture is like from Finnish winter:)
Thank you Arjaanneli, and welcome! All the pictures in this post were taken by my friend Judith so I can’t take credit for them. They are all beautiful, aren’t they. As for the winter scene – I think winter in Finland and winter on the Isle of Wight are very different! In 6 years of living here I have only known snow for two days!
Janice.
Liked your shots a lot, a castle is always interesting, but this one has IT.
Hereby I put Isle of White on my list of places to visit.
