Skywatch Friday: Celebrating sensational summer skies
Just a note – if you have time, all of these images look better full screen. Just click on each one and it will happen.
If you had asked me, just five months ago, what’s my favourite sort of sky you would have received in response one of my very best old fashioned looks. But here I am, with my fourteenth Skywatch Friday post, and able to tell you that without fail, skies like the one in these photographs have me rushing for my camera.
Since this is a celebration of my favourite sort of sky I thought I would be completely self-indulgent and combine it with a few of my other favourite things. All these photographs were taken yesterday afternoon in my garden – one of my favourite places to be. The first and last ones feature poppies, which a quick flick through recent blog entries will demonstrate are one of my favourite photographic subjects for June. This next one features the plum tree which is my favourite part of the garden, although you will understand that I don’t normally lie on my back under said plum tree, looking upwards. Heavens, no, the neighbours already have too much to talk about!
I’m also rather partial to fairly abstract shots. This is part of our little summer house. It needs painting so I’m not going to show you the rest of it! Maybe that will be a project for the coming months and I could feature it in the autumn with a rocking chair and rustic blanket or some such…
Yes, I’m afraid we do have a rather ostentatious three-tier fountain. But in our defence this was here when we bought the house, installed by the previous owners. And we did decline the invitation to purchase their large Italian marble replicas of the Four Seasons and Michelangelo’s David. Although I was thinking yesterday afternoon what good subjects they would have made against this beautiful sky… Incidentally, don’t worry about my reputation with the neighbours following this next shot. It’s true that I had to dangle my legs over the bottom tier, lie flat on the ground and point the camera upwards to capture this image of the top tier – but thankfully the fountain is not visible from any neighbouring property. So all that can be our little secret…!
And finally, just because I can’t resist this combination of deep pink against my favourite sky blue, here’s one of the last poppies of the season. There’ll be more next year.
Hope the skies are sensational where you are!
Skywatch Friday is organised every week by Klaus, Sandy, Ivar, Wren, Fishing Guy and Louise. Thanks to them and hundreds of regular contributors, you can click on the badge below to see beautiful skies from all over the world.
Since I have been so self-indulgent this also seems a gentle way in to Leah’s suggested theme of self for July’s Creative Every Day challenge. You can click here to see how others are starting to work with that.

I absolutely LOVE these pictures!
Just…WOW!
What a perfect, blue sky!
I especially love the poppy photos!
Wow! You are a master when it comes to snapping skies!
These pictures are sensational! That last one especially.
I can’t help thinking what David would have looked like had you photographed him from a similar angle.
your images are truly stunning. I wish you were near, you could photograph my portfolio!
I do like pictures taken from unusual angles.
That beautiful sky makes a perfect backdrop for your photos. Great Skywatch post!
You are so right, enlarged that are just magical aliens form another world.
It as been my pleasure to view all these great captures…
Sky Watch can grow on you beware. ha!…
I started taking part from the begining when Dot from the USA started it off… she passed it into my hands and it was hosted right here in the Uk for over a year… I then saw the numbers grow each week and needed a team… that team are still going strong now… and me.. I retired from hosting but still carry on posting… It as been nice dropping by to another area of the UK and saying hello and admiring the pictures

I love the poppy shots
really wonderful shots….the color, the light, the subjects, composition. I really enjoyed looking at these!
wow, really beautiful pictures with nice angles! I especially like the first and the last ones with the poppies!
Super shots, all of them although the mind boggles with the visual possibilities of you shooting with a leg up in the air.
I love the first one of the Papaver somnifera seed pods against the sku. Beautiful the way the light picks out the crenulated edge and caresses their round bellies.
Clouds are just wonderful. And love those plants in that first photo, look almost other-earthly.
The poppy heads look like other world aliens looking upward to the sky! Very nice.
How amazing. I like all.
Excellent shots..
Wow…all of these are spectacular. The first one reminds me of an “alien invasion”…I too think that kind of sky with the wispy high altitude clouds is perfect for skywatching photos. We get skies like that around here sometimes, but it is more likely that the sky is clear blue without any clouds. I think the thin clouds definitely allow for the blue colored sky to pop out more. Your photography just keeps getting better and better. Enjoy!
Thanks for sharing these magnificient skies and pics of plants with us (and Maria
– wow.. simply out of this world! I love how photography is a portal to our own discoveries and paradigms; what an amazing mirror and mentor it is.
Blessings.. and enjoy those skies!
Hi Janice,
Each of these photos is wonderful and so full of color and beauty. I love the angle you shot them at. And yes- pinks against a beautiful sky, ooh la la.
WOW! Those are freaky round poppy heads – so cool!
A fountain?!
oh wow… the angle on the poppies is priceless!!
Perhaps we were separated at birth, we seem to see the world many of the same ways. Take a look at my header on The Road to Here.
I love these photos, different angles are my favorites.

What awesome skies – I love skyscapes as well. But the blues here are spectacular.
Perfect!
The first one is awesome!
O my goodness, I love these sky pics! The poppy one at the top especially filled me with delight. Brava!
the poppy photos are amazing! the first one seems like alien ships
!
Lovely photos with a unique perspective. The first photo made me chuckle. It could be a scene from a Disney movie like Ants;)

I love the first one, the others too, but the 1st is my favourite!! Great idea to combine things you like with skies you like.
