Duetto buffo di due gatti

What do you give to the birthday cat who has everything?
Well I’m going to take a crazy, wild guess here and assume that most of you do not give him a shot at Worldwide Internet Superstardom…?
Why, Oh Why do I do these things?!
It all started with Leah’s suggested theme of sound for this month’s Creative Every Day. ‘Some of you may find this quite a stretch,’ she said. ‘Oh no, not I,’ I thought, smugly. ‘This is one theme where I can really excel – my opportunity to be, well at any rate last amongst equals with all the real artists who participate over at Creative Every Day.’ But amongst equals, see? That’s the important part. I am actually musically inclined. Much to the irritation of my sons I even think in song titles and lyrics. I’m always bursting into song at inappropriate times! I actually have already made a small collection of Artist Trading Cards based on song titles. Sound is my thing!
So I started to formulate a plan. Oliver and I would perform an earth shattering duet based on Rossini’s famous Duetto buffo di due gatti (Comic duet for two cats). ‘Earth shattering’ because, well let’s face it, it isn’t usual for one of the singers to be an actual cat.
That was where I made my first mistake.
You see, cats don’t read music. Not only that, but our normally excessively vocal cat seemed to have taken a vow of silence during the two days at the weekend set aside for recording. In the end we did manage to get a couple of half-hearted miaows out of him but, well, I had to take most of both parts myself. I decided to overcome this by cunningly playing the role of Cat 1, originally assigned to Oliver, as a sort of ’street cat’. Oliver would take over in the second part of the piece with a variety of perfectly timed miaows. And no-one would ever know it hadn’t been him all along. To emphasise the difference in the characters, the role of Cat 2, taken by myself, would be performed in an operatic style. The whole thing would be a modern interpretation of Rossini’s piece in the manner of Avril Lavigne’s Sk8er Boi. Sheer genius!
I guess it had gone too far before I realised it was all an unmitigated disaster. See, what I found was that whether I miaow like a street cat or like an operatic cat, I still sound like me, miaowing. And although Oliver does, indeed, feature in the second half, his offerings hardly amount to a duet. So, despite having somehow persuaded my husband to work at the computer for several hours whilst I brought all my Virgoan traits to bear in overseeing precise rhythmic adjustments to the location of Oliver’s miaows, I finally came to the conclusion that this ‘duet’ was probably best consigned to the recycling bin and put down to experience.
That was my second mistake – including someone else in my foolhardiness - someone who was now not prepared to sit by while I decided it had all been a waste of (his precious) time! And that is where you find me now: caught, as they say, between a rock and a hard place.
So here it is, Oliver, my lovely precious boy. We have seen each other through thick and thin. Now here is your 50 seconds of fame, your opportunity for Worldwide Internet Superstardom. And along with that my dignity. How do I know that one day, when I am rich and famous and being interviewed live on BBC1 by Jonathan Ross, this is going to come back and haunt me?
I can say no more, dear readers, except that normal standards will resume with my next post, and I hope to be able to win back your respect. Click here if you must and then cover your ears for 50 seconds precisely.

Happy Birthday Ollie!

Yes, this is my contribution to Creative Every Day. Fortunately, you can click on the badge tag to find out how real artists have interpreted the theme of sound. I now accept that I shall never, never be able to walk amongst their ranks. And if you think I’m going to link back from Creative Every Day to attract any more interest in this than is absolutely necessary you are very much mistaken, my friend!

I was moved to tears…..of laughter! It was great! You need to loop it so it lasts a couple of minutes. Bravo! Encore! Encore! Can I have Oliver’s autograph or paw print?
LOL. LOL. LOL.
Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!
I always respected you but my respect for you quadrupled! What a fabulous idea and rendition.
You should link it to the creative idea blog. You know creativity doesn’t have to be all about serious stuff. This was just a brilliant idea and fabulous execution. I am still giggling.
OK off to listen to it again:)
You know… if your long suffering husband and technical wizard can convert this into ring tones, it would sell like crazy! I know I would buy it:)
Oooh…great idea, Scriber!
OMG!!!!! This is the best response to CED ever!! And of course my cat love ears would be over the meoooon about it, but seriously, I adore this and you for doing it. So, so, so awesome.
I do hope you’ll reconsider linking to it on CED. I would even mention it myself if I was sure you wouldn’t kill me for doing it!
(You have a beautiful voice, by the way!)
This is more than lovely
!

Happy belated birthday to the Star
Happy Birthday Ollie! I think you are very talented! You could be even better with some coaching. You would learn to project more..and sing from the diaphragm. But, you are off to an excellent start! Have you ever tried “Somewhere over the Rainbow”? I bet you could do a good job on that! Keep up the good work!
A message from Oliver:
I’m writing this because the Crazy Lady has now gone to a darkened room to lie down. I’d like to thank you all sincerely for your support. Mr Long Suffering is working on the ring tone idea so Scriber and Dan, you may find one in your Inboxes one of these days. Leah and Crazy Lady have been in negotiations this afternoon and Leah is going to mention my performance next time she does a round-up of ‘Sound’ on Creative Every Day. This is wonderful because more people from all over the world will be able to appreciate my great talent. Nicole and Dan I have had a lovely birthday, thank you, mostly just sleeping it off after the exertions of the weekend. The family are having a cheesecake to celebrate my 17 years. Do you think I will get any? Not a bit of it! Nada! There are rumblings about a future project also involving the dog. This will be a bit like having to project over the volume of Tom Jones so yes, I will definitely have to work on my diaphragm. Thank you all, lovely fans. Ollie, x.
Brava Bravissimo Bravo ! Braviss !
Ollie you rule ! And don’t let them get away without a taste of your own birthday cheesecake !
This is such fun!!!
Thank you for providing me with a laugh…
Love the promo shot of Oliver…he is beautiful and looking very svelte for 17!
This is better than I could ever have produced for the sound theme!!!
Oh my gosh!!!! That was so fabulous!! You both made my day! I laughed so loud, it’s a good thing I was alone in the house or people might have thought I was going off the deep end. Well done! Count me in for the ringtone, please! LOL. I’m serious! You’ll both be famous now!
Oh you are too cute! I was not brave enough to actually add the sound of me playing the saxophone on my post
(1st picture from Leah’s post) Your whole post was a ton of fun to read. Just what I needed to start my day off right!
Happy Birthday to Oliver!
came over from Leah’s – worth every second!
OMG – that is priceless!!! Happy Birthday, Ollie.
MEOW WOW! my old guy . Pee wee, he who must be obeyed, is also 17 and vocal only when i am preparing a meal in the close by kitchen. my old guy lives on the deck and stares through the windows until we hear him staring. …yes we are staff for 3 cats and your tribute was so funny and touching! many happy returns of the day!
That was a funny post, a funny recording and to top it off, operatic kitty has a beautiful voice. Hopefully she’ll sing again.
Fabulous!!! You have started me thinking about what my kitty Keiku (who plays the piano when the mood strikes her) and I can do!!
Brilliant and funny…bravo, bravissimo!!
Happy Birthday, Ollie!
Well, what can I say? Thanks everyone, as much for not throwing rotten tomatoes at the computer screen as anything. Or perhaps you did do that?! I’m thrilled to have been included in Leah’s round-up of ’sound’, along with all the other, genuine, works of art, and rather taken aback that this has struck such a chord with so many people. Liz, you should so do a collaborative project with Keiku. Perhaps we could even form a band (or a 12-step support group at any rate…) since my piano playing is not my strength – Keiku may be more naturally talented. Now, after all this positive feedback my mind has gone into overdrive. I have plans for posting an old ‘Singing Cristmas Card’ that I recorded with my boys when they were little, and also am investigating a project with the dog…
Thank you all so much,
Janice.
Bravo! What a hoot. It is 7:00 in the morning, your duo has brought laughter into my day.
I agree with all your other friends who enjoyed this duet and the idea behind it all.
Ollie is talented, I’m sure, and we all know how difficult it is to get cats to perform on demand. But in addition, Ollie is just plain handsome! I can think of some other “performers” who get by on looks alone, thanks to their clever “handlers”. Happy b-day, Ollie!
As a sound obsessed vocal expert, Oliver shows great potential… I think he would make an awesome Siegmund – and the drama he could bring to his refusal to go to Valhalla would reduce any audience to helpless tears!
PLEASE Can I use this picture on my website??? Along with a link to his purrfect singing?
Thanks Janice, you are definitely as catmad as me.
Look up solicitation purring if you want to REALLY see how controlled we are by felines.
Keep on singing – and don’t let Oliver retire.
Fergus
I love this! It is wild, playful and wonderful. I had no idea that music is also one of your amazing talents and passions! Thank you so much for being brave enough to share this with us.
